During oxygenic photosynthesis, phytoplankton split water molecules, releasing O&amp;lt;sub&amp;gt;2&amp;lt;/sub&amp;gt; that carries the &amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;18&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;O label.
